eco community

We are co-creating an “ecovillage”, but we’re too small to call it that. Other words we use to describe us is an “ecohamlet” or “econeighbourhood”.

Our aims are the same as an ecovillage, and we are an accredited member of the Global Ecovillage Network.

Another reason we like the word “ecocommunity” is that its edges are connective. Our community doesn’t end at the boundaries of our land, and we hope to become a community hub for like-hearted sustainability oriented folk in the area.

permaculture …

Permaculture systems form the basis of our landscape plan, including food (community gardens, chickens, orchards and bushfoods); movement; water and energy systems.

Permaculture principles of “caring for Earth”, “caring for each other” and “fair share” underpin our community.

design principles …

Our aim is to develop a high quality, environmentally sensitive neighbourhood, based on and applying sustainable living principles:

  • looking after and respecting the natural environment and country

  • caring for people and engaging productively with the local community

  • living comfortably within a small ecological and resource use footprint

  • supporting a sense of wellbeing, creative endeavour and prosperity

  • sharing our learning with others

Jagera (we pronounce it jag-ee-ra) is named after the beautiful foam bark tree, an important local rainforest regeneration pioneer and traditional resource.

This species is one of many regrowing on our community land, which was basically a cleared paddock back in the 1970’s.
